Book excerpt: Slender, dark-haired Willow had been sent East as a child. Now, she returned to her mother's people, the Nez Perce of the Great Northwest, to teach them the white man's ways. The magnificent full-blooded warrior Bear had been raised to be proud, wild and free. His meeting with Willow would set two lives on a collision course- and two hearts aflame with forbidden desire. For the year was 1877, a time of tragedy and change. Pursued by cavalry, forced into impassable terrain, Bear's band of Nez Perce would soon be fleeing for their lives. With them would be Willow, bound by her unshakable devotion to Bear, yet destined to be torn from his arms by another man's treachery. Swept up on an odyssey of courage and passion, it would take all her strength and love to survive. . . and to save them both. The award-winning author of novels set in the Old West, Georgina Gentry is one of America's favorite romance writers. Vibrant with authentic history, shimmering with tender emotion, SONG OF THE WARRIOR is her most moving, sensual and unforgettable story yet. "ONE OF THE FINEST WRITERS OF THE DECADE!" - Romantic Times

Book excerpt: In this totally unforgettable sixth book in the Savage Destiny series, a relentless wave of frontier progress forces itself into the lives of Zeke and Abbie Monroe, threatening their many years of abiding love and forcing a separation unlike any other they have experienced. Zeke joins the Cheyenne in their last effort to hold on to the freedom they knew until the white man invaded their pristine domain and destroyed their game, their hunting grounds, their beautiful innocence. Meet the New Dawn is a keenly powerful and poignant story about the last years of Zeke and Abbie Monroe’s life together, and how their love and their passion for each other lingers on into their twilight years as proof that age and the challenges of life cannot dim the love these two share, a love that causes a man and woman to see each other only as the fifteen-year-old girl who once touched a savage older man’s hand over a campfire, a touch that changed both their lives forever. Get out the Kleenex for this powerful read you will never, ever forget! PRAISE: “Power, passion, tragedy, and triumph are Rosanne Bittner’s hallmarks. Again and again, she brings readers to tears.” —Romantic Times “Extraordinary…Bittner’s characters spring to life.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the United States is often referred to as "a nation of immigrants," the history of migration to, and settlement in, America is much more tumultuous than such a simple descriptor implies. This history encompasses not just the hopeful Europeans that famously passed through Ellis Island in the late nineteenth century, but Central and South Americans fleeing poverty and violence in the twentieth century, as well as refugees from war-torn regions in Asia and the Middle East. It also includes the hundreds of thousands of African slaves imported to the New World during the colonial era and the Native American peoples who were displaced by settlers. Through pictures and primary sources, this book explores different aspects of migration and settlement in American history and demonstrates how the legacies of immigration restriction, chattel slavery, western conquest, and manifest destiny continue to define the country today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A master practitioner’s view of his craft, this classic survey of the fiction of the American West is part literary history, part criticism, and entertaining throughout. The first edition of The Wister Trace was published in 1987, when Larry McMurtry had just reinvented himself as a writer of Westerns and Cormac McCarthy’s career had not yet taken off. Loren D. Estleman’s long-overdue update connects these new masters with older writers, assesses the genre’s past, present, and future, and takes account of the renaissance of western movies, as well. Estleman’s title indicates the importance he assigns Owen Wister’s 1902 classic, The Virginian. Wister was not the first writer of Westerns, but he defined the genre, contrasting chivalry with the lawlessness of the border and introducing such lines as “When you call me that, smile!” Estleman tips his hat to Wister’s predecessors, among them Ned Buntline, the inventor of the dime novel, and Buffalo Bill. His assessments of Wister’s successors—Zane Grey, Walter Van Tilburg Clark, and Louis L’Amour, to name but three—soon make clear the impossibility of differentiating great western writing from great American writing. Especially important in this new edition is the attention to women writers. The author devotes a chapter each to Dorothy Johnson—author of “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”—and Annie Proulx, whose Wyoming stories include “Brokeback Mountain.” In his discussion of movies, Estleman includes a list of film adaptations that will guide readers to movies, and moviegoers to books. An appendix draws readers’ attention to authors not covered elsewhere in the volume—some of them old masters like Bret Harte and Jack London, but many of them fascinating outliers ranging from Clifford Irving to Joe R. Lansdale.
