Book excerpt: Are you hungry to hear God’s voice, but don’t know how? Jesus Speaks teaches readers how to listen for the voice of Jesus and how you can grow in your ability to recognize and respond to his voice daily. While the Lord frequently speaks to us, we don’t really hear his voice until we recognize it. In Jesus Speaks, Sweet and Viola unpack the many ways the Lord speaks to his people today by exploring how the disciples interacted with the risen Jesus—from the Gospels to Revelation. They demystify the process in a warm, practical way, providing insights on how you can recognize the voice of Jesus in your own life. Separated into two sections, the first provides a big-picture look at how the resurrected Jesus spoke in the New Testament, while the second contains short, actionable chapters filled with scriptural quotes and references. Both sections work together to help you recognize and respond to the voice of Jesus in your everyday life. Readers will be able to: Gain a firm foundation in the scriptures, learning how Jesus spoke to his disciples Dispel myths and misinformation surrounding what it means to hear the voice of Jesus today Grow the ability to recognize God’s voice and learn how to respond Essential for Christians seeking to improve their relationship with Jesus, Jesus Speaks is the long-awaited third volume in the JESUS trilogy: Jesus Manifesto; Jesus: A Theography; and Jesus Speaks.

Mounting an oppressive manhunt for suspected dissidents and traitors loyal to the French Republic, Bonaparte creates a ruthless regime of terror in which daily executions are carried out in the name of political genocide. Jean Luc Rousseau, along with Claude and Marielle Laroche, are sheltered from the all-too-recent upheaval living in the quiet community of Guilers, until an enchanting newcomer arrives. Her very presence threatens the placid complacency that has each of them under its spell, but when calamity strikes, all believe that only Rebecca can provide the evidence necessary to substantiate the truth. Will the Redemption return in time for her to save the life of Jean Luc Rousseau?

Book excerpt: Reversing the predominant critical interpretation of La Ceppède and the Théorèmes, this study claims that literary contexts and avatars act as a point of entry into devotion. The book reads La Ceppède from the inside out, asking principal question: How does the literary initiate an exploration of the theological? Focusing on the ways in which the Théorèmes transform literature into a potential instrument of salvation, the text looks at La Ceppède's adaptation of different Renaissance lyric types. Modulation of the formal and thematic traits of lyric subgenres such as the blason, the baiser, the pastoral and pastourelle, as well as the emblem allow La Ceppède to develop and exploit literature as a contemplative framework. The goals in taking this approach are to emphasize La Ceppède's originality in terms of representing the Christian body and spiritually erotic imagery. This methodology also highlights La Ceppède's use of lyric subgenre as a means of unifying the first and second volumes of the Théorèmes. In its final chapter, the book compares and contrasts La Ceppède's appropriation of lyric forms with that of other Renaissance poets such as Lazare de Selve, Jean de Sponde, and Marguerite de Navarre. The work concludes by arguing that the contribution of La Ceppède's text lies in the singularity of its narrative structure, its poetic mission, and its depiction of Christ's humanity. Literary structure becomes meditative structure, as lyric form becomes a vehicle toward redemption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-depth analysis of Victor Burgin’s video installation Parzival (2013) In commemoration of the destruction of the University Library of Leuven (Belgium) in August 1914, the projection work Parzival, created by Victor Burgin (°UK, 1941) in 2013, was installed within the rebuilt Library. The installation uniquely marked the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, which left its profound traces on both the consciousness and physiognomy of the city of Leuven. Burgin’s reflection on Richard Wagner’s opera Parsifal (premiere 1882) combines the artist’s computer modelled images (a bombed out street, a sunset meadow, a Venetian palazzo, …) with citations from Roberto Rossellini’s Germany Year Zero (1948) and references to works by Milan Kundera, W.G. Sebald and Philip K. Dick. This publication provides an in-depth analysis of Parzival, a work that is inspired by the period of seven months that Wagner spent in Venice (1858-1859). Burgin’s Parzival raises questions about some of the most fundamental elements in Wagner’s operatic work: the longing for a savior, the complex connection between violence and catharsis, and the presentiment that destruction awaits humanity in the future (Götterdämmerung). In an associative manner, Parzival brings together various artistic and political features to confront the romantic ideal of the ruin with the horrors that might result from such a myth. In addition, this book contains a reprint of Michel Foucault’s essay “The Imagination of the Nineteenth Century” (1980). GPRC label:

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giacomo Puccini, composer of some of the world’s most popular operas, including La Bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly, was also a highly literary person who based his librettos on existing works of literature. This work explores that literary inheritance in an effort to enhance the listener’s appreciation of the operatic experience. The author argues that the majority of Puccini’s operas compose a grand cycle that finds its roots in the romance genre of 12th century France, serving to celebrate the strong, independent heroine. Via a close examination of the source works, the librettos, and the scores, this book offers fresh perspective on Puccini’s legacy.
