Book excerpt: Discover the 20th century's most dynamic and fascinating history makers. These inspiring life stories pay tribute to the character, determination, and personal courage of heroes who have made a difference in all our lives. Nelson Mandela Hero for Democracy The son of a tribal chief, Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to fighting against apartheid for his people's freedom -- despite the fact he spent twenty-seven years behind bars. But on a bright afternoon in February 1990, Mandela walked through the gates of prison and stepped onto the world stage, committed to lead South Africans of all races from tyranny to real democracy. This is the moving story of Mandela's life, as well as a gripping portrait of South Africa and its remarkable transformation. Yet democracy did not happen overnight, and this volume chronicles Mandela's grueling negotiations with then-president de Klerk as they worked to hammer out the country's constitution, the vehement resistance by the right-wing Boers, the historic election as the world held its breath, a look at South Africa's new position in the global community -- and the challenge President Nelson Mandela faces for the future.

Book excerpt: The death of Nelson Mandela, the great South African fighter for freedom, in December 2013 prompted several colleagues within the World Council of Comparative Education Societies community to come together to think about the significance of his life and his work for education. This book is the result of that coming together. The contributing authors reflect on what his life, the commitments he made and principally the values he took into the struggle for freedom in South Africa mean for education. The point of departure for the book is that of honouring the man. It begins with the argument that the values for which he stood, namely, the unconditional dignity of all human beings, respect for difference and principally his lifelong commitment to justice, have a special significance for how we as inhabitants of an increasingly connected and interdependent world conduct our personal lives, our relationships with one another and with the material and living space which surrounds us. It is an ecological approach. As the world moves into a twenty-first century where, paradoxically, we know so much and yet appear to understand so little, and so find ourselves struggling to create social lives in which all of us can feel respected, can offer respect to others and live lives free of fear and anxiety, the values for which he stood have specific relevance for how we do the important job of teaching and what we put into it. Mandela poses deeply provocative questions about the kinds of lives we seek for ourselves and for everybody else around us.

Today, opinions about South Africa’s first democratically elected president remain split. But no matter how they feel about Mandela, most South Africans acknowledge that they owe him for many of the freedoms they enjoy. Beyond that, Mandela became a symbol of what it meant to stand up to oppression and then to forgive the oppressor. The South African freedom fighter was jailed for 26 years, from the age of 46 to 71, for his protests against apartheid. From militant resistance against a white government to call for reconciliation, from challenging his oppressors to later famously forgiving them, from spending decades in prison to acknowledging those years as a period of learning, Mandela’s views and his politics are not palatable to all, but they certainly made heads turn and garnered him and his fight global recognition. Read all about the controversial life of Nelson Mandela, the man who was born to be king. VALERIE BODDEN is the author of more than 200 children’s books. Her books have received critical acclaim from Booklist, Children’s Literature, ForeWord Magazine, Horn Book Guide, VOYA, and School Library Journal.

Book excerpt: Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what it takes to change the world in this comprehensive biography that tells the complete life story of internationally renowned peacemaker Nelson Mandela. Civil rights activist. World leader. Philanthropist. Writer. Throughout his life, Nelson Mandela took on many roles, all in the pursuit of peace. Born in 1918 in South Africa, he grew up in a culture of government-enforced racism and became involved in the anti-apartheid movement at a young age. Deeply committed to nonviolent activism, Mandela directed a peaceful campaign against the racist policies of his South African government, and spent twenty-seven years in prison as a result. In the years following his emergence as a free man, he continued his efforts to dismantle the country’s apartheid system and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside South African President F.W. de Klerk. In 1994 he was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president and served until his retirement from active politics in 1999 at the age of eighty-one. He continued to promote global peace until his death in 2013, and his legacy lives on. From Nelson Mandela’s childhood to his monumental impact on race relations and nonviolent activism, this comprehensive biography shares the truth about the man behind the iconic smile: his struggles, his triumphs, and the sacrifices he made along the way.

Book excerpt: A brief biography of an icon like Nelson Mandela is a difficult undertaking. This offering is ideal for someone, not from Africa, who would like to know what motivated a man to give his life to a cause that would see him spend the most productive years of his life in jail. Inside you will read about... ✓ A boy in rural South Africa ✓ Egoli...place of gold ✓ The African National Congress and the birth of an activist ✓ The Treason Trial ✓ Underground for the armed struggle ✓ The Soweto Uprising – the beginning of the end ✓ Pollsmoor Prison..."a modern face but a primitive heart." To understand this, the reader must have an insight into the context of life in South Africa during the Apartheid era. But, they also need to know how the intense, unbreakable bond between the leaders of the African National Congress was forged and the effect the reluctant decision to form the armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, had on them. The author has included references to and quotes from his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom which reveals some of "Madiba's" personal anguish.
