Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language and Gender is an introduction to the study of the relation between gender and language use, written by two leading experts in the field. This new edition, thoroughly updated and restructured, brings out more strongly an emphasis on practice and change, while retaining the broad scope of its predecessor and its accessible introductions which explain the key concepts in a non-technical way. The authors integrate issues of sexuality more thoroughly into the discussion, exploring more diverse gendered and sexual identities and practices. The core emphasis is on change, both in linguistic resources and their use and in gender and sexual ideologies and personae. This book explores how change often involves conflict and competing norms, both social and linguistic. Drawing on their own extensive research, as well as other key literature, the authors argue that the connections between language and gender are deep yet fluid, and arise in social practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of art is inseparable from the history of color. And what a fascinating story they tell together: one that brims with an all-star cast of characters, eye-opening details, and unexpected detours through the annals of human civilization and scientific discovery. Enter critically acclaimed writer and popular journalist Victoria Finlay, who here takes readers across the globe and over the centuries on an unforgettable tour through the brilliant history of color in art. Written for newcomers to the subject and aspiring young artists alike, Finlay’s quest to uncover the origins and science of color will beguile readers of all ages with its warm and conversational style. Her rich narrative is illustrated in full color throughout with 166 major works of art—most from the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Readers of this book will revel in a treasure trove of fun-filled facts and anecdotes. Were it not for Cleopatra, for instance, purple might not have become the royal color of the Western world. Without Napoleon, the black graphite pencil might never have found its way into the hands of Cézanne. Without mango-eating cows, the sunsets of Turner might have lost their shimmering glow. And were it not for the pigment cobalt blue, the halls of museums worldwide might still be filled with forged Vermeers. Red ocher, green earth, Indian yellow, lead white—no pigment from the artist’s broad and diverse palette escapes Finlay’s shrewd eye in this breathtaking exploration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imprisoned in English, Anna Wierzbicka argues that in the present English-dominated world, millions of people - including academics, lawyers, diplomats, and writers - can become "prisoners of English", unable to think outside English. In particular, social sciences and the humanities are now increasingly locked in a conceptual framework grounded in English. To most scholars in these fields, treating English as a default language seems a natural thing to do. The book's approach is interdisciplinary, and its themes range over areas of central interest to anthropology, psychology, and sociology, among others. The linguistic material is drawn from languages of America, Australia, the Pacific, South-East Asia and Europe. Wierzbicka argues that it is time for human sciences to take advantage of English as a global lingua franca while at the same time transcending the limitations of the historically-shaped conceptual vocabulary of English. And she shows how this can be done.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's no secret that most girls, at some point, love all things princess: the poofy dresses, the plastic tiaras, the color pink. Even grown-up women can't get enough of royal weddings and royal gossip. Yet critics claim the princess dream sets little girls up to be weak and submissive, and allows grown women to indulge in fantasies of rescue rather than hard work and self-reliance. Enter Jerramy Fine -- an unabashed feminist who is proud of her life-long princess obsession and more than happy to defend it. Through her amusing life story and in-depth research, Fine makes it clear that feminine doesn't mean weak, pink doesn't mean inferior, and girliness is not incompatible with ambition. From 9th century Cinderella to modern-day Frozen, from Princess Diana to Kate Middleton, from Wonder Woman to Princess Leia, Fine valiantly assures us that princesses have always been about power, not passivity. And those who love them can still be confident, intelligent women. Provocative, insightful, but also witty and personal, In Defense of the Princess empowers girls, women, and parents to dream of happily ever after without any guilt or shame.

Everyone agrees. And so we made this activity book, celebrating the greatest color of all. Packed with fun activities like mazes, one-color coloring, spot-the-difference, creative writing prompts, drawing lessons, search & finds, paper toy crafts, and more! With bonus stickers included, celebrate your favorite color like you’ve never done before. And unlike other books, this one was specially made with EVEN MORE blue inks to create more variations of the color than you’ve ever seen in print! Oh, and we also created seven other activity books celebrating those other—clearly subpar—colors that people seem to also like for some silly reason: RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, PINK, PURPLE, and BLACK. The My Favorite Color Activity Book series has a color for everyone!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This journal is a few hundred pages of unpopular opinion, I wrote this ball of rage between 2014-2016 and I planned to give to my gender studies professor after I took her class. When I left her class I noticed that there's a lot of misleading information about people that disagree with feminists and feminism, and this book will help demystify some of those notions. I may have written this book for her but I believe it can help others as well. The 1st group of people that this book will help are people that don't like feminists and feminism you'll agree with almost everything I have to say, trust me you're not alone. This book is full of red pills you're going to love it. The 2nd group of people are people that are on the fence about feminists. Yeah, feminists may have told you the dictionary definition of feminism, and you might have heard some things about the feminist movement but you're still not quite sure what to make of them. I think you will gain the most from what I went through. I will show you the tactics some feminists use to get what they want. These are all things you should know before you engage with any feminist. The 3rd group of people are the people that don't understand why so many people have such hard opinions on feminism and feminists. Hopefully this book will help you understand were the first group of people are coming from. I use jokes, satire and personal experiences to bring levity to this hot topic issue. I don't want to tell you what to think. I want to show you what I went through so you can make up your own mind, and even if you disagree with me I hope you enjoy the ride. Now onto the 4th group, these are the feminists that are vexed and can't figure out why so many people dislike feminism and why feminists can't crack 18 percent of the population. I think you will benefit the most from what I have to say. I'm not going to berate you or attack you I'm just going to make my claims on why I disagree with your dogmatic ideology and hopefully you can respect that. I really want you to understand where I'm coming from and maybe we can build a bridge from there. Now on to the big mama of them all the 5th group, if you are the type of feminist that believes everything is sexist and everything is racist and every man is a misogynist. Put this book down, you are going to have a bad time. I deconstruct almost everything you believe in with ruthless and logical precision and I know for a fact that this book is going to trigger you into oblivion. Hell, you might even do something crazy, like set this book on fire and I don't want to see my book set a blaze. So save your money save your time and continue to smash the patriarchy. But to the other 4 out of 5 of you crack open a beer or pour a glass of wine and enjoy my descent into madness.

Book excerpt: In this enthralling cosmic journey through space and time, astrophysicist Jillian Scudder locates our home planet within its own ‘family tree’. Our parent the Earth and its sibling planets in our solar system formed within the same gas cloud. Without our grandparent the Sun, we would not exist, and the Sun in turn relies on the Milky Way as its home. The Milky Way rests in a larger web of galaxies that traces its origins right back to tiny fluctuations in the very early universe. Following these cosmic connections, we discover the many ties that bind us to our universe. Based around readers’ questions from the author’s popular blog ‘Astroquizzical’, the book provides a quirky guide to how things work in the universe and why things are the way they are, from shooting stars on Earth, to black holes, to entire galaxies. For anyone interested in the ‘big picture’ of how the cosmos functions and how it is all connected, Jillian Scudder is the perfect guide.
