Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Touch of Bark, the Feel of Stone Racken has never been to the ends of the earth. He cannot speak to reindeer, he cannot fly like a bird, and he has never seen the all-mother, nor does he want to. Racken lives in the time beforebefore the vast forests of Great Britain were chopped down, a time when people gathered roots and berries and hunted and fished in a land where aurochs, wolves, and deer roamed and huge flocks of birds clouded the sky. It was a time before people wrote, a time before his people raised sheep or cows. It was a time when Indo-European tribes began to arrive. Rackens tribe was one of the old tribes, and the old tribes began to fear what they saw happening: why were there fewer deer and the fish that filled the streams were not as plentiful, and why had the weather changed? Why, indeed, were there so many mysteries, and more importantly, who were these people who came over the water to settle in the land of the people? At the age of thirteen, Rackens only concern was to become a hunter for his tribe, like his father was; but all that changes when an odd band of men come to Rackens village. And to his surprise, his mother apprentices him to their leader, Mathen. It is with these men that Racken learns the depths of friendship and fear, hate and trust, love and loss. He is on a long journey that brings him to the very edge of life, and the vision he brings back challenges him and his tribe. On this journey, begun with great reluctance, Racken learns and becomes much more than he had ever imagined.

Book excerpt: With Wayne Bennett From the silky wax qualities of the surfaces of some quartz menhirs to the wood-grain textures of others, to the golden honeycombed limestones of Malta, to the icy frozen waves of the Cambrian sandstone of south-east Sweden, this book investigates the sensuous material qualities of stone. Tactile sensations, sonorous qualities, colour, and visual impressions are all shown to play a vital part in our understanding of the power and significance of prehistoric monuments in relation to their landscapes. In The Materiality of Stone, Christopher Tilley presents a radically new way of analyzing the significance of both 'cultural' and 'natural' stone in prehistoric European landscapes. Tilley's groundbreaking approach is to interpret human experience in a multidimensional and sensuous human way, rather than through an abstract analytical gaze. The studies range widely from the menhirs of prehistoric Brittany to Maltese Neolithic temples to Bronze Age rock carvings and cairns in southern Sweden. Tilley leaves no stone unturned as he also considers how the internal spaces and landscape settings are interpreted in relation to artifacts, substances, and related places that were deeply meaningful to the people who inhabited them and remain no less evocative today. In its innovative approach to understanding human experience through the tangible rocks and stone of our past, The Materiality of Stone is both a major theoretical and substantive contribution to the field of material culture studies and the study of European prehistory.

Book excerpt: Energy runs through all of life linking us with other people, our homes and nature and the universe, but we don't really use it to our benefit. Understanding and directing our vital energy can give life more meaning and purpose and help with our health, relationships and mental wellbeing. The book is divided into four sections: - Body (including breathing, exercise and the energy of food) - Emotional (connecting to other people) - Environmental (how to cultivate a positive atmosphere at home and work and how to connect with the natural world) - Spiritual (using visualisation and ritual to connect to the ultimate energy source, how to manage the dark energy of judgement and depression, and finally, looking at death and where that energy goes). Energy healing treatments include reiki, chakra healing, acupressure and acupuncture, but with Jane's simple techniques, there's so much you can do at home to clear your energy paths and find harmony and joy in daily life.

Book excerpt: We inhabit a world of more than humans. For life to flourish, we must listen to the calls this world makes on us, and respond with care, sensitivity and judgement. That is what it means to correspond, to join our lives with those of the beings, matters and elements with whom, and with which, we dwell upon the earth. In this book, anthropologist Tim Ingold corresponds with landscapes and forests, oceans and skies, monuments and artworks. To each he brings the same spontaneity of thought and observation, the same intimacy and lightness of touch, but also the same affection, longing and care that, in the days when we used to write letters by hand, we would bring to our correspondences with one another. The result is a profound yet accessible inquiry into ways of attending to the world around us, into the relation between art and life, and into the craft of writing itself. At a time of environmental crisis, when words so often seem to fail us, Ingold points to how the practice of correspondence can help restore our kinship with a stricken earth.

Book excerpt: Take one part of the world''''s oldest spiritual system (shamanism), mix in one part of one of the world''''s most popular spiritual cultures (the Celts), and bring it up to date by blending in modern forms of shamanism. The result is one of the most amazing books you''''ll ever use, D. J. Conway''''s "By Oak, Ash, & Thorn. This book is filled with information that can start you on a lifetime of study, practice, and spirituality. First, you''''ll learn about ancient and modern forms of shamanism. You''''ll discover the secrets of the three shamanic worlds, and how you can travel through these mysterious realms. You''''ll be shown how to communicate and deal with the entities and allies you meet there. You''''ll also learn about the tools that a shaman uses. The thing that makes this book unique is that it comes from the viewpoint of Celtic shamanism, and not some generalized form. As a result, the worlds are specifically Celtic in nature. The tools come from Celtic myth and lore. The fifty entities you meet are named and defined as the Faery Folk and their kin from the Bean sidhe (banshee) to the Will o'''' the Wisp (a faery who appears at night in lonely places carrying a lantern to confuse travellers). Almost fifty more animal allies are listed and described. You will also learn the mysteries of the vision quest and how it applies and can be used by Celtic shamans. Before starting your journey you will take a test to determine your strengths and weaknesses as a potential shaman. Other topics include: - Shamanic Healing - Soul Retrieval - Shape-shifting - Invisibility - Divination with stones, the omen stick and the Ogamalphabet - Pathworking through the three shamanic worlds - Different forms of Celtic magic - Herbs This only begins to hint at everything that you can learn from this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolmens are iconic international monumental constructions which represent the first megalithic architecture (after menhirs) in north-west Europe. These monuments are characterised by an enormous capstone balanced on top of smaller uprights. However, previous investigations of these extraordinary monuments have focussed on three main areas of debate. First, typology has been a dominant feature of discussion, particularly the position of dolmens in the ordering of chambered tombs. Second, attention has been placed not on how they were built but how they were used. Finally much debate has centred on their visual appearance (whether they were covered by mounds or cairns). This book provides a reappraisal of the ‘dolmen’ as an architectural entity and provides an alternative perspective on function. This is achieved through a re-theorising of the nature of megalithic architecture grounded in the results of a new research/fieldwork project covering Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia. It is argued that instead of understanding dolmen simply as chambered tombs these were multi-faceted monuments whose construction was as much to do with enchantment and captivation as it was with containing the dead. Consequently, the presence of human remains within dolmens is also critically evaluated and a new interpretation offered.

Book excerpt: Above them the great rock bulged out like a too clever forehead, too clever for anything to grow upon, too smooth for anyone to climb... It might be the only place on earth which is so high and difficult to get to, that people can't reach it. When Sangita the Ranee of Bidwar is caught up in a scandal, her husband banishes her from the palace and forbids access to their young son, Anwar. She lives miserably as a disgraced woman, praying to Ganesh for Anwar to be taken from her husband, so that he would know her suffering. Then, Anwar goes missing. In a hill-tribe far above the palace, on land impenetrable to man, the young males are dying. When they come across a Coarseone – a child from civilisation below - they use him to create a new life: their new Maw, their king. Two generations later Sangita's granddaughter, Devi, heads to the family's derelict hill palace to research the mountain's minerals, with instructions to look out for the apocryphal Ama stone. At the same time, a tree-felling company finally reach the mountain top where they discover the hill- tribe. Maw, now a young man, is injured trying to stop the lumberjacks driving them off the land. He is brought to Devi, who takes him down to the palace where the family care for and educate him, but he always has a look in his eyes that no one understands. Will his tribe think their king has deserted them, or do they suspect he is playing a longer game... a life-long game to avenge his tribe their suffering? Tikkipala is a hypnotic tale of love and preservation at a time of fading empires. Meticulously and soulfully written, Banerji takes the heart on a journey through mystical cultures and spiritual practices, to a world where anything is possible if love is strong enough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inner work is a name commonly given to the inner processes that happen in ritual. It can also mean the transformation of the psyche that comes about through engaging in religious ritual. However, the best kind of inner work also has an effect outside the individual and outside the circle. When rituals are focused only on self-development, they tend to be a bit too introspective. Ritual is about creating and maintaining relationships and connections - between body, mind, and spirit; with the Earth, Nature, the land, the spirit world, the community, and friends. It is about making meaning, weaving a web of symbolism, story, mythology, meaning, community, and love. Creating a community that welcomes and celebrates diversity. Creating strong and authentic identity to resist the pressures of consumerism and commercialism and capitalism. Weaving relationship with other beings: humans, animals, birds, spirits, deities.
