Book excerpt: Murder. Myth. Metal. Tom Hadley’s quest to follow in the footsteps of his idol and become the world’s most famous drummer is put on hold when he meets Obie, a strange little boy with a terrible haircut and extraordinary powers. Obie is a Super, and all Supers must register with a secretive government agency known as the Conservatory. Those that refuse face consequences ranging from the ghastly to the downright gruesome. Terrified that his lack of control will see him thrown inside Iron Mountain – a notorious prison with a dark and terrible history - Obie is desperate to keep his powers under wraps, a secret he entrusts to no one but Tom. When Obie’s true nature is exposed, Tom must fight to save him from the clutches of a fearsome federal agent and his Thumpers, professional Super hunters with a frightening reputation. Even more formidable is the agent’s daughter; classmate, valedictorian, and aspiring megalomaniac, Nicole Milch will stop at nothing to win her father’s approval. To save Obie, Tom will be forced to navigate a world of spectacular powers, all the while being drawn into a dangerous conspiracy involving a murdered Super, powerful heroes, and a mystery that will bring him face to face with Iron Mountain’s most infamous inmate - his estranged father. Thunderhead launches a new superhero/adventure series that transports readers into a rich, imaginative world packed with action, humor, and earth-shattering powers.

Book excerpt: In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times bestselling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created? Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him? The answer lies in the Tone, the Toll, and the Thunder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hiking Trails of the Great Smoky Mountains is an essential guide to one of America’s most breathtaking and rugged national parks. The second edition of this compellingly readable and useful book is completely updated, giving outdoor enthusiasts the most current information they need to explore this world-renowned wilderness. Included here are facts on more than 125 official trails recognized by the Park Service. Each one has its own setting, purpose, style, and theme, and author Kenneth Wise describes them in rich and vivid detail. For every route, he includes a set of driving directions to the trailhead, major points of interest, a schedule of distances to each one, a comprehensive outline of the trail’s course, specifics about where it begins and ends, references to the U.S. Geological Survey’s quadrangle maps, and, when available, historical anecdotes relating to the trail. His colorful descriptions of the area’s awe-inspiring beauty are sure to captivate even armchair travelers. Organized by sections that roughly correspond to the seventeen major watersheds in the Smokies, Wise starts in Tennessee and moves south into North Carolina, with two major trails—the Lakeshore and the Appalachian—that traverse several watersheds treated independently. Further enhancing the utility of this volume is the inclusion of the Great Smoky Mountains’ official trail map as well as an informative introduction filled with details about the geology, climate, vegetation, wildlife, human history, and environmental concerns of the region. A seasoned outdoorsman with more than thirty years of experience in the area and codirector of the Great Smoky Mountains Regional Project at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Wise brings an exceptional depth of knowledge to this guide. Both experienced hikers and novices will find this newly revised edition an invaluable resource for trekking in the splendor of the Smokies. In addition to being codirector of the Great Smoky Mountains Regional Project, Kenneth Wise is associate professor at UTK’s John C. Hodges Library, coeditor of Terra Incognita: An Annotated Bibliography of the Great Smoky Mountains, 1544–1934, and coauthor of A Natural History of Mount Le Conte.

Book excerpt: The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is one of the largest examples of U.S. public-private partnerships. Founded in 1982, SBIR was designed to encourage small business to develop new processes and products and to provide quality research in support of the many missions of the U.S. government, including health, energy, the environment, and national defense. In response to a request from the U.S. Congress, the National Research Council assessed SBIR as administered by the five federal agencies that together make up 96 percent of program expenditures. This book, one of six in the series, reports on the SBIR program at the Department of Energy. It finds that, in spite of resource constraints, the DoE has made significant progress in meeting the legislative objectives of SBIR and that the program is effectively addressing the mission of the Department of Energy. The book documents the achievements and challenges of the program and recommends programmatic changes to make the SBIR program even more effective in achieving its legislative goals.

It's also been six months of waiting for Alex's parents to return from Iowa. Alex and Darla decide they can wait no longer and must retrace their journey into Iowa to find and bring back Alex's parents to the tenuous safety of Illinois. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of poems written by inspiration by Professor Emeritus Charles Alan Long, that reflect a long career of scholarship with many historical and lyrical expressions hidden by layers of research and teaching. A chronology of sorts, it begins in Dr. Long’s youth in college over sixty years ago, and continued until he was 80, as a teacher, professor of research, museum director, soldier, with success in bio-mathematics, natural history, as a philosopher, critic, and member of a progressive family. Some current, practical problems studied from the vantage of evolutionist, ecologist, biblical critic, naturalist, and offended American include the sudden rise of marijuana, political rhetoric, usury beyond decency, and by liberals and conservatives alike the erosion of personal liberty, especially of speech and universities. But the poems, from laments, to loves, to joy, to pathos and death, poverty to wealth, nature, art, music, and poetry itself are presented in almost musical sadness or joy. The history of an intellectual’s scholarly travels, whereas some poems are for children, some for society, some attacking evils, some praising good people, with merit even in deference to religions, many nations, and his beloved homeland. The poems are in large part visits into nostalgia and sentiment. Cultures of many peoples in many nations are described, as are many situations in America. There is, of course, an American core, but surely this poet loves good peoples and the history of Greece, France, Scotland, Africa, Russia, and other places. Loves genuine for many women inspired many lovely poems, a lot of romance. But profound in its argument is love for the poor and unhappy people, love for art, nature, philosophy, even sports, science and math, even religions. It becomes unified by reason, his active caring, and his bursts of singing. Much attention is given to geography, history, science and nature.
